Susac’s Syndrome Diet
There is no diet, food or supplement that will treat, improve or prevent SuS. However, given that SuS involves inflammation-related blockage of the microvessels in brain, retina, and inner ear, it is possible that an anti-inflammatory diet may be of some benefit. Omega 3 fatty acids found in oily fish like salmon, walnuts and flax seeds are particularly important in reducing inflammation, while saturated fats in red meat, fried foods and high-fat dairy products may increase inflammation. Some experts also believe that meats cooked at high temperatures (as in grilling, frying and microwaving) should be avoided because this type of cooking produces compounds called AGEs that can worsen inflammation in the body. Also, given that blood vessel blockage is a key feature of this disease, saturated fats should be minimized as they are known to increase the risk of atherosclerosis.
The traditional Mediterranean diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats and beans has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects. Olive oil in particular has been shown to lower the amount of chemicals in the body that cause inflammation. Of utmost importance is that people with SuS eat the same heart-healthy, well-balanced diet that is recommended for all Americans, with an emphasis on more plant-based foods and fewer saturated fats, to avoid additional health issues such as heart disease, diabetes and obesity.
